Strategic White Space Exercise

Map How Your Industry Competes

Compare how well your industry delivers value to the end user and identify where your competition ISN’T

What This Graph Demonstrates

This exercise creates a graph comparing three types of offerings within an industry based on the factors on which they most readily compete.

The purpose is to examine the industry as a whole and identify possible opportunities no one is currently leveraging. Resist the habit of benchmarking your company against its competition. We’re thinking differently right now.

When the lines on the graph track closely, the three levels of industry offerings compete in similar ways and little innovation currently exists relative to those competitive factors. That’s GOOD news. It may reveal potential opportunities to create distinctive value and go where the competition ISN’T.

When the lines do not track closely, innovation or meaningful differences may already exist relative to those competitive factors. There may still be pockets of opportunities in creating similar offerings with a more profitable approach, which is worth exploring.

What to Do

Enter the name of the industry you want to examine.

The graph will compare three types of industry offerings:

  • Budget-Friendly Industry Offering
  • Mid-Range Industry Offering
  • Premium Industry Offering

Enter the factors on which these three industry offerings currently compete. Six spaces are provided initially. You may add additional competitive factors, up to a maximum of 12.

For each competitive factor, rate how well each industry offering is currently delivered to the end user:

  • 1 = Poor
  • 2 = Average
  • 3 = Great

Use whole numbers only. Complete the ratings for at least five competitive factors to generate the graph.

The graph will provide a visual snapshot of how similarly—or differently—the three industry offerings compete.
